Unit 3 focuses on the difference between the present continuous and present simple tenses. The present continuous (I am doing) is used when we talk about something that is happening at the time of speaking or around it and to talk about things that are happening these days or weeks. The present simple (I do) is used when we talk about things in general or things that happen repeatedly. It's also used for facts that are always true. Through various exercises and examples, this unit will help learners to understand and accurately use these two crucial aspects of English grammar.

A. Present Continuous với động từ chỉ trạng thái (State Verbs)

Chúng ta có thể dùng thì Hiện tại tiếp diễn với một số động từ chỉ trạng thái (như attract, like, look, love, sound) để nhấn mạnh tính tạm thời hoặc một khoảng thời gian xung quanh hiện tại.

So sánh:

• The children love having her here. (Sự yêu thích chung, thường xuyên)
• The children are loving having her here at the moment. (Tình huống tạm thời, hiện tại)

Lưu ý:

• Một số động từ chỉ trạng thái hiếm khi dùng với Hiện tại tiếp diễn: believe, consist of, doubt, own (xem thêm CR:A4).

B. Động từ có nghĩa khác nhau khi dùng làm State Verb và Action Verb

Một số động từ có nghĩa khác nhau tùy vào việc chúng diễn tả trạng thái (state) hay hành động (action):

• Với nghĩa trạng thái: Thường dùng Hiện tại đơn.
• Với nghĩa hành động: Có thể dùng cả Hiện tại đơn hoặc Hiện tại tiếp diễn.
